It's Time For Fall Gardening!

By Zenobia's Garden Admin October 16, 2021 0 comments

Ahh, after a long hot summer many gardeners are ready for the blessed coolness of Fall, which seems to be sneaking in as I write. Summer has put up a good battle here though, with temps last week still in the 90's.

A few years ago I became interested in Fall gardening after seeing the growth in our overwintered pots, sometimes with as many as 12 baby plants per pot having joined the original plant that was tucked in over the winter. I've come to see Fall as the ideal gardening time, with far fewer pesky flies and mosquitoes - the bane of my existence!

Now, we take great pleasure in planning and putting in new gardens in October and November, knowing they will continue to grow and reproduce underground to pop up early in the spring, bigger and stronger!

Another thing I enjoy about Fall gardening is the natural transition for the plants in the spring, as they will come up at the perfect time, blooming earlier than Spring planted herbs and often those plants can be divided during late Summer or Fall, creating even more beauty and herbal goodness.

Fall planting is the easiest way to plant, just take your plant and put it in the ground where you want it, mark it, and you're done. You skip all of the transplant shock, the hovering to make sure it's okay, and the trips to water it during the heat of the summer. Fall plants establish easily as long as they have good drainage and a little mulch around them for protection.

Over the past few years we've gotten a lot of feedback from customers asking for different shipping schedules as Spring hits a lot earlier in the southern states than it does here, complicating planting times.

So you will see in our catalog plants marked dormant that can be shipped year round. And hey, I get it, I'm a gardening nut too and don't want to wait for shipping deadlines to come!

So if you want a jumpstart on your medicinal garden for next year, take a look at our selection of dormant plants. If you don't see what you need, drop us a line and we will see if we have it.

Until next time, happy gardening!
